The Green Wood stays local with sustainable food focus
/The subterranean space at 1402 Queen St. East has gone through much iteration since the departure of Red Rocket Coffee over five years ago, with ill-fated restaurants such as Rakia Bar and Crate giving it a shot.
Despite the hardship of its predecessors, the newly opened The Green Wood hopes to flourish with its fresh, local fare overseen by head chef and girl-boss Elisa Corrigan.
Powered by the boutique hospitality group Distrikt 461 of Desmond & Beatrice and SPiN, The Green Wood is inspired by a commitment to the environment.
The business advocates the social responsibility that comes with eating well, drawing on local suppliers such as Hooked, Fisherfolk, Olliffe, Gerber Meats, VG Meats, Grain Process and 100km Foods.
The brick-and-beam setting offers a welcoming space with clean lines and a minimal approach.
Large windows surround the space on the east and south sides and the setting sun provides the perfect ambience for the transition from café by day to snack bar at night.
Corrigan has curated a menu that puts a unique spin on classic dishes. Take the souk fries ($12), for instance, which are dressed with fresh and grilled vegetables, fried halloumi and a fried egg.
The highly recommended Issy’s Nosh ($12) — a sharing platter with the usual fixings — is topped with smoked salmon, more fried halloumi and an exceptional hummus.
The cocktails are boozy but refreshing. The mix your own ($8) option suggests atypical pairings such as bourbon and pear or tequila and grapefruit.
The Green Wood also has a selection of craft beers from the neighbourhood breweries, which will best be enjoyed on the spacious patio come summer months.
The Green Wood is open at 1402 Queen St. E. Hours are from 8 a.m. until late on the weekends.
