In what could be a world-first, an independent cafe opens in a space previously occupied by Starbucks. Talk about an underdog story.

Sugar Loaf Bakery has launched at the corner of Gerrard and Jones, where the coffee mega-chain once ran one of its most unique Toronto stores.

With double-height ceilings, a mezzanine area and rooftop patio, the location is more spacious than Sugar Loaf's original cafe on Queen St. E in Riverside. Like the original, cafe-bakery infuses traditional recipes with inventive flavours, influenced by various cultures such as French, Italian, and Brazilian, to create unique sweet and savoury goods.

Owner Rinaldo Angelicola says he's happy with local support since opening the doors to the new cafe.

"We have a new breakfast and lunch menu with quiches and waffles options," Angelicola says. "Waffle huevos rancheros with fried eggs, housemade salsa, black beans and guacamole, and benedict apple with caramelized apples, cheddar and strips of bacon, served with maple syrup and whipped cream."

The cafe is offering baked goods with a focus on croissants, cakes and challa, and has partnered with Fred's Bread for daily morning deliveries.

"We're still waiting for our liquor license to starting offering drinks and beer. We have decided to work with the Wellington Brewery and will offer two draft options we believe will pair nicely with our lunch and brunch menu."

Sugar Loaf's mezzanine level is also available for private events.

Sugar Loaf Bakery is now open at 1062 Gerrard St. E. Hours Visit sugarloafbakery.ca for more info.
