Miniature stone city pops up in Tommy Thompson Park
/Toronto likes to call itself “A city within a park” — but one local artist has given new meaning to the city’s unofficial slogan.
A miniature stone metropolis has sprung up in Tommy Thompson Park replete with skyscrapers, low rises, plazas, streets and boulevards. Its white, grey and black rock stand with sharp angles and a proportionate relief like a model developers use in presentations.
It’s the work of JD Craig, and it’s all been created in the sand from stones and construction debris found on the beach.
”I started Aug. 5,” he says. “Gathering stones as I walked along the beach east of the lighthouse.”
Craig says he enjoys cycling around Leslie Spit and the project is a way to escape the city.
The mini city within the park sits about 10 metres from the shore, he says.
“The project has no end date but Mother Nature will determine that for me.”
