Downtown relief line subway will now run under Carlaw Ave.
/Toronto's Downtown Relief Line is getting an alignment makeover as the north-south route originally proposed along Pape Ave. will now run down Carlaw Ave.
After protests from Pape Ave. residents, city planners are now recommending the line run beneath Carlaw Ave., south of Gerrard to Eastern Ave.
The route option would run under a wider, mixed-use street with mid-rise buildings, including residential and commercial compared with Pape Ave., which is a low-density residential neighbourhood road.
The subway line would connect Toronto's downtown core with the Bloor-Danforth subway, which would help relieve the capacity pressure of the Yonge line.
The preferred alignment will go to executive committee on May 16 and city council on May 24.
