Faces of the Leslieville Flea: Backyard Bedding

Every month, we're profiling familiar faces from the Leslieville Flea to learn how they got their start and what to expect from them at the market.

Ahead of the last outdoor market of the season on Sunday, Oct. 6, we've checked in with Shannon and Greg from Backyard Bedding, which specializes in hand-dyed organic cotton bedsheet sets.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BACKYARD BEDDING?

Backyard Bedding was dreamt up in the summer of 2018 while napping in the backyard. Shannon, a connoisseur of sleep, had dyed her first set of bedsheets in the backyard a year earlier and decided to turn this one-time project into a small business using only organic fabrics. While we no longer do our work in the backyard, each set individually dyed by Shannon (when she’s not napping) in her Toronto home studio.

WHAT’S A FUNNY STORY ABOUT YOUR LINE OF WORK?

Working with dye is a messy business, literally. While we take precautions to keep things neat and tidy it’s not uncommon to see Shannon with fingers dyed the same colour as her sheets.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

Our hope is to expand our product offerings to include organic bamboo sheet sets as well as duvet covers.

Meet Shannon and Greg at the next Leslieville Flea on Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Leslieville’s beautiful Ashbridge Estate. For all the details, go to leslievilleflea.com.
