The rich, buttery aroma of shortbread will soon be missing in Riverside. After 20 years in Toronto's east end, Mary Macleod's Shortbread is moving to the west side of the city.

The shop, which is famous for its dozens of flavours of shortbread carried in retail locations across the country, has outgrown its Queen East location.

According to Sharon Macleod, Mary's daughter in law who manages the business, the decision was made to move to a larger facility where they can operate at full capacity and continue to grow.

"We will definitely miss the vibrant neighbourhood," Sharon said in a statement. "As an early settler in Riverside, we've watched the area grow and flourish."

The new space won't have a retail presence, but instead will be geared towards growing their distribution business.

"Of course, we will continue to make our shortbread Mary’s way — by hand, in small batches, using premium ingredients."

The last day open at the Riverside shop will be Feb. 14. Stop by at 639 Queen Street East for a sweet farewell.
