La Cubana brings its retro Cuban diner to Gerrard East
/La Cubana has opened its latest location on Gerrard St. E in Toronto's east end.
With its trademark seafoam green walls, mosaic floors and old-school vibe, the stylish retro diner serves up plates of casual Cuban food in a bright, cheery space.
"We are a family run Cuban restaurant, we make everything fresh in-house including our breads and sauces," says La Cubana's Pablo Mozo.
Its original snack bar opened four years ago on Roncesvalles Ave. in the city's west end (and on Ossington Ave. since then), and has become a neighbourhood destination for national specialties such as Cuban sandwiches, grilled corn and piled roasted pork and chicken or grilled fish and shrimp with slaw, rice, beans and plantaines.
Cocktails draw from Havana's rich history to create a list of fruity rum and gin concoctions, plus sangria, cervezas and vintage sodas and juices.
It's all fun and nothing too fancy.
The menus are printed in bright red ink on paper place mats, and there is a separate menu for niños (kids under 12).
La Cubana is now open at 1030 Gerrard St. E. from 11:30 a.m. seven days a week. The restaurant closes at 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
