The Kingston Road Village Concert Series (KRVCS) proudly presents another season of sensational, family-friendly concerts. The tradition of bringing professional musicians, representing all genres from traditional classical to the avant-garde continues with four exciting performances.
Opening the season, on Sunday Nov. 8 at 1:30 pm is Bohemians in Brooklyn. Experience the lyricism of Tom Allen and his cast of stellar musicians as they weave together story-telling and music to celebrate the tale of how author Carson McCullers wound up sharing a brownstone in wartime Brooklyn with a poet (WH Auden), a musician (Benjamin Britten) and a book-loving stripper (Gypsy Rose Lee).
Featuring original songs by Bryce Kulak (piano/voice) and Tom Allen (narration/trombone/voice) along with music by composers Benjamin Britten, Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Weill, Paul Bowles and Colin McPhee. Completing the cast are Patricia O'Callaghan (percussion/voice) and Lori Gemmell (harp/guitar/voice).
Be My Valentine on Friday, Feb. 12 at 8 pm promises an evening of high energy and sophisticated harmonies from the publicly and critically acclaimed acappella group Countermeasure. Led by award-winning composer/singer Aaron Jenson and joined by 14 of Canada's top vocal talents, Countermeasure covers a broad range of styles sung in unique arrangements highlighting the full breadth and range of the voice.
Sunday, March 6th at 3 pm The Toronto Violin Summit will feature the violin in world music: Celtic fiddling, Norwegian hard anger and jazz. Violin stars
Chris McKhool (with Kevin Laliberte from the Sultans of String), Celtic fiddler Anne Lederman and returning violinist Rebekah Wolkstein (Payadora) partnered with award-winning jazz violinist, mandolin player and producer Drew Jurecka.
Rounding off the season on Sunday, April 17, at 1:30 pm is the highly lauded Cecilia String Quartet (CSQ). Prize-winners at several international competitions, including Osaka (2008) and Bordeaux (2010), CSQ were awarded First Prize at the 2010 Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC), where they also won the prize for the best performance of the commissioned work. CSQ are the Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of Toronto and have performed for leading presenters in North America and Europe.
The KRVCS is the creation of Tim Dawson, a double bassist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Kingston Road United Church. The proceeds raised from these concerts assist the church to undertake critical repairs on its building, which serves as a community hub in the Beaches area of Toronto.
Concerts are $20 for adult admission, $10 for students and free to kids 12 and under. Located at 975 Kingston Road, Toronto, the church venue is easily accessible by bus and subway, or by car with plenty of parking available in the area.
